Japanese RPG fans know that Chrono Trigger ranks among the best console role-playing games ever made. Its imaginative story line, vibrant graphics and memorable characters combined to create something special when the epic adventure debuted on the SNES back in 1995.

Rumors of a remake have circulated for years, but nothing concrete ever materialized. A group of fans even began work on a 3D update of the game, but they were shut down after Square Enix caught wind of their copyright-infringing plans.

Now, the company has confirmed that they will be bringing an updated remake of Chrono Trigger to the Nintendo DS. The news began as a rumor when scans purporting to depict the game appeared on message boards around the Internet yesterday. However, the rumor was more or less confirmed today when fans spotted a telltale sign on the company's official website. The company's Japanese homepage shows an animation of a ticking clock and the words "Nintendo DS". Crisis Core fans can get their hearts racing by checking out the teaser here.

One burning question remains unanswered: will this "remake" be a direct port of the original game, or will it update the graphics and gameplay in the same manner as Final Fantasy III? We are sure there will be much debate and discussion on this point between hardcore RPG fans in the coming months.
